LEGISLATION TO REPEAL 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL' INTRODUCED

American Senator Joseph Lieberman has introduced legislation that aims to repeal the ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ ban on military personnel in the US.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the county’s largest LGBT civil rights group, lauded the introduction of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010 in the US Senate.

“By introducing the first bill to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the Senate, Senator Lieberman is continuing the momentum to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell this year,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese.

“His introduction of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010 is a bold, patriotic move that will long be remembered as key to removing the stain of the discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law from the US code."

The 17 year old law demands that gay and lesbian personnel be fired from serving in the military if their sexuality comes to light.

President Barack Obama has committed his administration to work towards repealing the ban this year. The US Defense Department is currently conducting a review of the issue.
