ESSENTIAL LESBIAN READING LIST, P1

16 July 2008
So there are a few pre-Stonewall classics in this list that are important in the development of lesbian literature. The lesbians in these books were not permitted to have happy endings, in order to be published they were forced to either have the lesbian characters return to straight lives or commit suicide. Thankfully the modern books don’t suffer the same fate.

For the most part we chose books that we really enjoyed and believe are of a high standard, not just good because they have lesbian characters.

We went for quantity and have just given you a very brief run down of each book. Click on the titles of the books and you can read more about them.

Pre-Stonewall
The Well of Loneliness - Radclyffe Hall
Written in the 1920's this is a heavy weight lesbian classic. It was one of the first books to speak against the homophobic treatment of lesbians by society.

The Price of Salt - Patricia Highsmith
Originally published in 1952 under the pseudonym Clare Morgan. Patricia Highsmith wrote the books that the movie "The Talented Mr Ripley" was based on. This book tells the story of two women in love as they are pursued by a private investigator across the country.

Modern
Rubyfruit Jungle - Rita Mae Brown
Rubyfruit Jungle is a fantastic story of a woman who knows who she is from early on and doesn't apologise or hide it from the world. It's inspiring and affirming. It's just as relevant now as it was 25 years ago.

Stone Butch Blues - Lesley Feinberg
Stone Butch Blues is essentially a transgender story, it's about a certain era and the struggle to be oneself in a society where the lines are very clearly drawn. This is an intense and touching read.

Fried Green Tomatoes - Fanie Flagg
I'm sure you remember the movie with Mary Stuart Masterson and Jessica Tandy. The book has a greater emphasises on the relationship between the women but it isn't explicit. It's a great story and a fun read.

Oranges are not the Only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit follows a young lesbian growing up in a very religious home. Winterson won the Whitbread Award for a First Novel in 1985 for Oranges are not the Only Fruit. The book is beautifully written and a must for any literary enthusiast.
